RW Sept 17 #1

Hey Avid Readers! Tell us what you read today in class...but tell us using one vocabulary word and one of the sentence patterns we have studied (either 6, 7, or 8). I did not read in class, but I did read some last night. I am reading a book called Dragonfly in Amber, which is the second book of a serious. Ask Megan about the first one...she is reading it right now. The second one involved the main character's daughter...but I don't want to spoil anything for Megan. Overall, it is a story about a time-traveller who goes to 18th Century Scotland. The inimical conditions into which she is sent is one of the conflicts of the novel. Since I like the topic of time travel and since I am interested in history, I love this series!

I'm still reading Speak. It still has a slow moving plot. The author has procrastinated telling you the secret until the very end. I do like, however, how the story is told in a very not formal way. Since I can only read this book on Wednesdays, I also am reading Host by Stephanie Myers at home. Because I loved her twilight series and because Chris said it was one of her favorite books, I decided to give it a shot. Host is actually really confusing so far. It is about aliens taking over human bodies, but it is from the point of view of an alien thing. It is pretty interesting.

Today I started reading Lake of Dead Languages. Haley read it and said it was good so I decided to try it. I really like it so far. The teacher has a covert passed that I am uncovering as I read. There is a certain place that everyone is afraid of: the lake. I really want to find out what happens next with the teacher. It is sort of a mysterie and seems like a teen book.

Hi!

Today I continued to read Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen. Before reading this book, I had only heard of one Sarah Dessen novel: Just Listen. (Sentence Pattern #8) So far I really enjoy reading her stories and will most definately continue to read some more!

As said in last week's blog, the main character, Ruby, has been abandoned by her mother and has now been sent by a social worker to live with her older sister Cora. When moving to the new neighborhood, when meeting new people, when joining a new school, Ruby suddenly becomes apprehensive. (Sentence Pattern # 7)

Today during my reading, I discovered a lot about Ruby's past and why she lost connection with her older sister Cora for many years. Both girls, Cora and Ruby feel odium towards their mother due to many key events and situations when they were growing up. (Vocab word)I feel bad for Ruby because she is feeling bedlam going through all of these transitions. (Vocab Word)

I definately will continue to read and finish this novel; hopefully by next week!

Today I continued to read the Sweet Hereafter. This book is still moving extremely slow and all I know about the character is that she is a bus driver for her cities school. Dolores (the main character) is very MUNIFICENT to her neighbors) Her husband is also hadicapped, he recently had a stroke and is now in a wheelchair. A stroke often has a certain outcome: disabled walking, speech problems, and other severe problems (Sentence Pattern 8). Her husband not only has a wheelchair but he cant speak clearly. I won't spoil the rest incase someone wants to read the story.

Today, I started reading Prep by Curtis Sittenfield. Because I have read this before and because I liked it so much, I decided to read it again. So far Lee, the main character, has been at boarding school for about a month. She has no friends because she often feels that she doesn't fit in. Lee is from a middle-class family in Indiana, and Ault School is in a wealthy part of Massachusetts. Right now, Lee is searching for friends, but she can't stand most of the girls. I would suggest this book to girls who don't mind a little bit of provocative writing.

I finally finished The Realm of possibilities. The ending was really happy and everything really came together. The story is told from many points of view: thy are male and female, black and white, and from all sorts of walks of life. It's provocative to see how our actions can somehow effect someone we don't even know like that and how all our points of views could form into one story. I really like the Claddaugh ring (Google it!) on the cover. It's why I picked up the book and it ended up as part of the happy ending.

The book i am defiantly going to read starting this week is called "The Tea house Fire". It is about a girl named Aurelia who was born in New York in around 1850 to a French mother who was 14 when she had Aurelia. Her uncle is named Charles and he is a priest. Her uncle is sent on a missionary trip to Japan and he decides to take Aurelia and her mother along. Unfortunately Aurelia mother gets sick and while Aurelia and her uncle left first for Japan she dies. in japan they get stares from inimical natives who because of their cultural have distrust for foreigners during that time period. Since Aurelia just lot her mother and since she is still only 9 years old i think it will be interesting to follow her story from her point of view.

Hey Guys! Today in class i read a book called The Truth About Forever. Its by Sara Dessen and i got it last night and Im already obsessed with it! I would recomend this book to you if: you like teen books and captivating plots. the main character is Macy. Macy is dating an neat freak who is president of everything and very smart. Where i left off, Macy's dad had just past away. I have a feeling there is something is covert and I'll find out more about once I start reading more!Macy's boyfriend just left for the summer to go to "Smart Camp". She is sad and is filling in for him at his job at the library. Well I have to go read more so I'll update you next week!

Hey guys, it's Amanda C
I'm still reading the Rossetti Letter. It's really cool. I left off with Bedmar being stitched up by Alessandra. He had a fortuitous run in with some thugs or he thinks they might have been assasins or spies. As the Spanish Consperacy unfolds I see that there is only on country on the Spanish hit list: Italy. And yet the senetors of Italy insist on using their forces to kill a few troublesome pirates. They should listen to Sylvia, who sees it coming but no one believes him exept his slave (he thinks of him as a son) Batu. Batu is probably one of my favorite charictors that is alive. Because he's an orfin, and he has cool eyes blue and clear like glass, and he is also very mysterious. Batu is also very dangerous he was named after the grandson of Ghengis Khan. (sorry it's so long!)

I am still reading "Pretties". I haven’t gotten too much farther in the book. Today in class I read about Tally going to a party out in the town and they all had to dress up as some kind of "social group" I guess you could say but you wanted you be the best dressed. While she is at the party she feels that she’s being watched and keeps seeing the same figure in the corner of her eye. She has an idea as to who the person is and to all pretties it’s who they all fear most: the specials. I haven’t found out who it is yet but I hope to find out soon! The gist of what I read today was that Tally is finally learning the ways of the pretties but still feels that she is different than everyone else.

I am slowly working through Breaking Dawn. I'm still not pleased with the book, but at least I've gotten to a part that is more tolerable. Some of the action scenes, like her first hunt, are hard to read. Because I want to read them at the pace that I would think the scene would really be happening and since I miss half of the details, I have to read it over again. I don't like to settle with the gist of what's going on in movies or books. One thing I love about this book, though, is the vivid details Stephenie Meyer puts into descriptions of what Bella sees, hears, or smells. I can see what she sees in my mind's eye, and I love that.

Alright, maybe this book isn't so bad, but I still think Stephenie ran out of good ideas by resorting to making the impossible possible.

Hello. I am still reading "When You Are Engulfed In Flames" by David Sedaris. I'm really enjoying it so far. The main character went through a phase in his life where he would want to live in a antediluvian style home and thought it to be tasteful. He wanted to pretend he was living in the 1920s era I believe. He got a job washing dishes at a restaurant that played classical musical and found a boarding house with a room that was in a really old home. He decided to move out because his roomates were crazy: one had schizophrenia and the other was driven insane. I really love this book. It's very humorous with many suprises.

Hey, im reading "Cell" By Stevan King. The book has basicall strarted in a seen of bedlam. Crazy people running everywhere with explosions and murder. I like two things about this book: the great sense of detail, and the setting. Im also going to boost my rating of this book from a 3 to a 3.5...It keeps getting better. It has kind of hooked me.

Today in class I started "The Book Theif" by Markus Zusak. This story is told mysteriously: it seems to be told by the covert being that collects and heals the souls of the dead. It takes place in Germany, under Hitler's rule. He introduces the book with a prologue describing the three times he saw the "book theif." They're somewhat gruesome events, but they grab your attention. I really like this story already- it has a mystery about it that's really compelling. I can't wait to get deeper into it.

Today in class I started a new book called "At Frist Sight" by Nicholas Sparks. So far it's been pretty good, not amazing but good enough to keep me interested and keep reading. So far it's about about a guy and girl who are engaged but they've only known eachother for a week! You also find out that the girl is pregnant and that the guy has been married before but got a divorce. So far the book has just taken place while they're packing and getting ready to move into a house with eachother. While packing up to move, while facing the fact that she's pregnant, while prepping to get married after only knowing eachother a week, and while not knowing hardly anything about eachother, they both have equanimity. Both are very relaxed about the whole situation and don't seem very nervous for anything that's happening. On the back cover it said they had love at first sight but we'll see if it lasts. I'll keep reading this book and see if it starts getting really good.

I changed books and started reading A Little Princess. Many of you have probably seen the movie, and it is a good one. If you havn't seen the movie or read the book, I would suggest one of them. The story is about a young girl named Sara who lived with her father in India. Her mother died when she was very young. Her dad must go into a warin India, so he sends her to a boarding school/foster home in America. The kids all love her bcause she is like a mother to them. She tells them wonderful stories all the time and she helps everyone many of the girls: crying Lottie and servant Becky.(SP 8)Sara helps the servant, Becky, by telling her stories and giving her food while she cleans Sara's room. The time they spend together must be covert and they cannot tell Miss Minchin, the mean house owner. So far the book is as good as the movie is and I can't wait to see the similarities and differences in the bok and the movie. I also forget some parts of the movie, so the book will refresh my memory.

I am still reading The Things They Carried. It is actually getting to become a better book I must say. Although it is a little confusing at some points. In the beginning, one of the soldiers died and the other members had to keep equanimity atfer his death. This book really describes how much stuff they had to carry. Not all people can carry a really heavy back pack: consisting of radios, guns, hand grenades, clothes, canteens, and even food. Which together can weigh many, many pounds.

I finished my book from last week over the weekend. Today in class I started a debonair book: How to Take the Ex Out of Ex-boyfriend. The plot started out slow, but now that I am a ways through it, it is picking up. The main character is a typical teenager going through typical teenage problems. She is trying to win back her ex, but at the same time she is his opposing campaign manager to the school elections. My interest in the book is beginning to accrue as i get further into it. The author has started throwing in little suprises to hook the reader in.

Hey.
As Mrs. Stallman said I am reading Outlander. Because I love history and because I love books with tine travel, I really like this book's plot. This book is about a woman who accidentally time travels to the Scotland Highlands. I don't think I'll have any problems procrastinating with this book. The details and history are amazinG! More info later because I'm not that far into it yet.

The head just caought wind of the new medical break through and is now on the move to put an end to this threat. Noah is hoovering on the brink of war and in the bedlam of it all he is trying to pull through. He has now called an old friend, seth, to his aid. It seems there will be only be one outcome: war. the suspention is growing and I can't wait to read the rest!

Once again I am still reading Plague Maker. This time it is told by a different character. She is a teacher who is trying to accrue information about a boy who is wearing a bomb vest. This boy is only around fifteen and is willing to blow up the building. The bomb vest: C4 and a bunch of wires is set of by a detonator in the kids hand. The only problem is the kid speaks a language that only this teacher can speak and she must go in to try to calm him and make him come out.

All of these books sound interesting.

Christie: I love Sarah Dessen's books! I havn't read that one yet but I plan on it when I get the chance.

Christa: Did Nicholas Sparks write the Notebook? I heard that is a really good book.

Lea: I actually almost got that book at the library when I went haha. I really want to read the other book you were reading. It's called Forever right? You'll have to let me borrow it sometime.

Unknown said...

Sam- I also started reading the host. I agree that is is very confusing. I stopped reading and maybe I'll go back to reading it if I finish my other books I want to read.

Christa- I read a walk to remember by Sparks and I like the way he writes. Your book sounds interesting and sounds like it is a very girly book just like a walk to remember. Maybe i would like to read it.

Unknown said...

Corrine- My sister had to read The Things They Carried, but I'm not sure if she liked it or not. I'm not really a fan of war books, but I always become interested in a book after I start it. My problem is picking up a book that I wouldn't normaly read.

Audrey- I have always wanted to read Uglies. Would you reccomend it?

Unknown said...

Haley-
Your book sounds really good. I think it would be very interesting. I have not seen the movie or read the book and based on what you are telling me, it sounds good and I would be interested in reaing it.

Christa-
You're book already sounds like it's pretty interesting. The plot and story line sound really good!Im interrested to hear what happens with her being pregnant and them just being ingaged after only a week!? It sounds really good over all!

amanda lin said...

Christa:
You book sounds very provocative, I loved Nicholos Sparks movie adaption The Notebook from his book. It is one of my favorite movies. It sounds intresting to see if their rushed marriage can last.

Lea:
your book titles sounds really intresitng and funny. Yea starting a book usually is really slow. I think the plot is intrseting and how it will unfold wiht her trying to be with him, but against him at the same time.

Unknown said...

Taylor- You always read the books that sound good to me. I have heard of Lock and Key and I really want to rent it at the library, but my mom has not taken me yet.

Leann- I really don't know why you don't like Breaking Dawn. It was probably the nest book in the series!

Christa- I tried reading that book one time. It had a really slow plot and I was impatient so I stopped reading it. You should continue reading it and you can tell me how it is.

Unknown said...

Olivia- I never actually finished the book because I found A Little Princess at my house adn decided to read one I could keep. Once I am done with my book, I will probably start reading it again.

Stephanie- Your book sounds prety good as well. I love stories like that. You'll have to keep us updated on how it goes.

Audrey- This book sounds good, but kind of confusing. What are the pretties actually? Just a group of people who are pretty? The book sounds really good though.

Unknown said...

Lyndsey here again.

Haley- I never saw that movie, but it sounds like a good story.

Amanda- That book sounds good. I love stories that take place in different cultures. Even though they're based on real places, it sometimes seems like your character's in a different world.

Unknown said...

Olivia: that book sounds really neat! I love Stephanie Myers so I can't wait to read other books she's wrote other than the Twilight series!

LeAnn: I think that's the best thing about Breaking Dawn, the impossible becomes possible. If only that could be true in real life! LOL Tell me when you reach the ending, I can't wait to hear your thoughts about it!

Anonymous said...

hey alan that sounds like a twisting book. I'll have to accrue more info from you on it.

Chris i like the name of your book, "When you are engulfed in flames"

Unknown said...

Hey it's Amanda C

Sam- I heard Speak wasn't very good. Do you like it?

Lyndsey- That book sounds good. And what is a Claddaugh ring? Did it have anything to do with the story? It sounds pretty good. I might have to read it.

Audrey said...

Sam- I have heard that the Host is a really good book. Someone told me that they thought that it was almost better then the twilight series. I really want to read it but i dont have the book. I might have to borrow it from someone!

LeAnn- I dont know why you dont like Breaking Dawn. I really liked it. In the end i think everything comes togther. I didnt really like how everything ended but i still really enjoyed it!

Unknown said...

Olivia- It sounds like this is a really good book. Both you and Haley gave it really good reviews so I wouldn't mind reading it sometime myself.

Andrea- I've heard of alot of people who ahve read this book and really like it. So far it sounds really good. It must be if you're reading it for the second time! The plot sounds like this could really happen in real life which is cool.

Taylor- You always pick the best books! This one sounds really intersting also. I hope it keeps getting better, it sounds great so far. I would also feel bad for Ruby: all of those transitions must be really hard to deal with.

Anonymous said...

Sam- I'm glad you started reading The Host. I know it's a little confusing in the beginning but as the plot devolps the story becomes amazing.

Taylor- I've really wanted to read "Just Listen" ever since I helped my friend make a project for English on it. She got to pick her book and she picked that one and made a scapbook for her project. I was one of the main characters for her pictures and I want to know more about it.

Anonymous said...

Andrea: Your book sounds really good! It reminds me of a series that I have read before. Your book has to be good if you are reading it a second time!

Haley: I absolutely loved the movie! Although it was sad. I thought it was really cute. I haven't seen it in a while, though. I would like to read the book and compare it to the movie.

Emily G said...

Taylor- that book sounds pretty interesting. I've heard a lot about that one and Just Listen. I'll have to read them soon. Lyndsey- I think I started a book really similar to Realm of Possibilities, but it wasn't very good. I dind't finish I don't think, but I did try to read most of it. Maybe I'll read yours now, to see if I like it any better. Amanda L.- Now I really want to read yours. it seems pretty interesting. LeAnn- I'm really glad you've found something to like about Breaking Dawn. I loved the details that Stephanie Meyer included, too!Haley- I have A Little Princess, but I've never read past the first few pages. they kind of bore me. If it's good, though, I'll have to give it another try.

Unknown said...

Andrea: That sounds like I book that I would really like. I'm interested in those sorts of stories, the ones that I can relate to and understand the main character. It's easy to connect with people in stories like that.

Christie: The Truth About Forever is amazing. I know I've brought up how much I love it a lot, but I mean it. That book will not let you down. It had one of the best endings I could think of.

Brian: I saw my step mom reading that book a while ago, and thought about reading it, because she seemed to think it was good. I'm not into killing and all that jazz, but I keep thinking about reading Stephen King anyway. Just because he's so popular.

Unknown said...

Stephanie: The storyline sounds kind of interesting, but i dont think o'd be able to read a book that moved slow throughout the whole novel. I also don't think i could read a book that sad.
Andrea: Your book sounds kind of fun, maybe not for boys though. I think stories about teenage girls are good because they are always so eventful and they are easy to relate to.

Unknown said...

Haley, I loved the movie tte Little Princess with its sappy cliches and happy ending. I never knew there was a book and would love to read it. Have you noticed any major differences between the book and movie yet?
Emily, I too have started the Book THief but havn't gotten to far into the book. Reallyonly a few chapters here and there. I've been meanng to sit down and read the whole thing sometime. I thought the part I read was a little sad but the brilliant descriptoin and character make you want to continue. I think I might try reading it again!

I couldnt leave a comment on the thursday becasue I was at camp Y noah all that night and couldn't access a computer. So i'll just respond now:
Haley: I loved that movie so much. It was so sad. I want to borrow that book when your done, ok? I hope the book is just as good as the movie and they didn't change stuff like they normally do.
Christie: I love sarah Dessen books. The book you recommended last year was awesome. I might just have to read this book sometime if your already obssessed with it. The story sounds like it is going to be very sad and i enjoy reading sd stories.
