Reading Workshop Sept 10

I really loved everyone's contributions last week. Let's do it again! This time, give a rating (1 to 5) on how well you are enjoying the book (in addition to any other comments you would like to make). Have fun! PLEASE USE TWO VOCABULARY WORDS IN THURSDAY'S POST!

I would have to rate my book at a 4.5. Many people are probably mad I didn't give Breaking Dawn a five but i thought there was a down time in the book. It is so long and got repetitive in the middle. Everything combined I give it a
4.5. I am a slow reader so I am not done with the book yet, but I'm trying. I can't wait to have the Volturi come to the Cullens!!!!

My book, The Lake of Dead Languages, is really good book so far, even though I am only on the second chapter. I would so far rate this book at about a 4. I think that as I go on, it will become a 5, but so far its a 4. Its realy mysterious. The teacher found an old journal she had written when she went to the school. She told the story of the people who used to live at the school. The three sister supposedly drowned in the lake. SHe says that the story has been passed on to all the kids, but she knows the real story. She described all teh teachers and they are all very different. I realy am enjoying this book and hopefully it will become a 5 by the next blog!

Today in class i started reading "Pretties" by Scott Westerfeld. This is the second book in this series. So far Tally is now a pretty and she has waken up with a hang over because of the long night she had drinking and partying with friends.Tally is still adjusting to this new life style. So far its ok but i hope it gets better. I really liked the first book and i hope the second book is just as exciting!

Lyndsey here.

I have been reading the Realm of Possibilities on and off since last year and I read some of it today. I would give it a 4, because I really like how people's life stories are told through poems and the large variety of points of views it is from. However, sometimes the many charters get confusing, so that's what knocked it down. I really liked the poem I read today. It had an ABCs theme to the first letters. It was interesting, but it had to be really hard to write!

I started reading Airhead the other day and I would rate it a 4 so far. It is about a girl that got smashed by a TV and the model that saw it passed out. Em, the smashed one, woke up on the hospital and discovered that she was in Nikki's (the model) body. The book is very interesting, but it took a long time to find out how she ended up in Nikki's body. If you want to find out, you have to read the book!

Hi everyone :]

Okay, my book is called Lock and Key and its by Sarah Dessen. I got it from the library last night and started reading it in class today. Not too much happened so far so Im not going to ramble on about every single detail that happened in the ten or so pages that I have read.

But just to keep it short, a girl has moved into her older sisters house because her mother can't take care of her. She doesn't like it in her new house and neighborhood because she will have to start a new school. The two schools are completely different, culturally, so she most likely will have a hard time adjusting.

To rate this book, I would give it a 4. It has definately kept my attention in the short length that I have read. I'll keep on reading and hopefully finish the book by next blog and let everyone in on what it's like.

Sorry I don't have too much to say :[

Today, I was reading the third Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants book: Girls In Pants. I'm sure most of you know the story- 4 girls are facing a summer apart when they find a "magic" pair of pants that fits all of them. They send the pants to each other throughout the summer to stay connected. I love these books. I've read them all before, but they're just as interesting every timeyou read them. I like them because they have a lot more depth to the characters than some people would think. I love getting to know all of the characters so well that you feel like you're one of them. I'd have to rate them at a 4.5, personally.

Amanda C!
I would probably give my book a 4 because it starts up fast. But I'm only on page 14. The book is called Rossetti Letter. It starts off with a prologue type of chapter called The Hanged Man. The acual hanged man didn't come in until the end of the chapter. But in the chapter is my favorite forshadowing qoute, "flickering shadows turned his death grimace into a grin. Alessandrastoo transfixed, as it appeared that the hanged man was still alive. She imagined that he spoke to her, his warning in a harsh whisper: It could be you at the end of this rope, if you do not deliver that letter...but here is the fate of the one you love if you do." Creepy huh?

Hello. It's Lea.
I would rate my book as a 3.5. My friend read it yesterday when I let her borrow it and she told me that it gets better as it goes on. I definitely think I like the book better than I did last week. As the characters are being developed it is becoming easier to relate to them. I think this book is turning out to be a more adult book because it is starting to include more passionate parts of relationships. I am going to keep reading it though.

Im goign to have to rate my book, Things They Carried, a 3. I would give it a 3 because so far they havent really talked about much. They keep saying the same thing over and over again. However, when they talk about different stuff it gets really interesting! Im really excited to read agian next week!

Unknown said...

Today i read the book Cell by Stephen King. On a scale of 1 to 5 i would give it a 3...so far....It's basically about some kind of plague that makes people die or go crazy (it's transmitted through their cell phones). Right now there is a guy just who just witnessed some of the people go insane and thats it.

Unknown said...

I think I'll give my book, The Things They Carried, a 3. So far this book is good. Its really sort of graphic. A lot of the time they said the same thing more than once. It was probably important if they repeated it more than once. Im just not there yet. Sometimes I get confused only because there are so many people and things that they personally carry that I try to remember. I hope it gets better!

Unknown said...

So I continued reading Speak today in class. I would give it about a 3. I am not that far yet, so it might get better later on. Right now it is very slow. Not much has happened and it is getting sort of boring. I have heard that you do not find out the secret until the very end, so I might just have to keep reading it until I find out.

Unknown said...

Ok well i know this is going to sound really dumb but i forget the book that i started to read in class. Don't worry though i'll figure it out tomorrow. Anyway, the book was actually really good. I am not very far but so far i would rate it a 3. The character is actually a bus driver who has two kids. The woman loves to take her neighborhood kids to school. The author of this book is very descriptive and was describing the snow flakes very uniquely. I will actually continue to read this book. Anyone can remind me to find the title of the book out.

Today i continued reading the book His Hometown Girl. It started out being pretty good and I was enjoying it alot. Today though, it didnt catch my interest like at all and it seemed very drawn out and almost sort of cheesy. The whole second chapter was just pretty much a conversation between Karen and her grandmother about how the grandmother wasnt really "in love" with her husband ever but he was a good person and father. They just never had that deep connection. That's also what happened to Karen, so she broke off her engagment because her soon to be husband told her he just wanted to marry her because she was reliable and could help him with his goals. Right now I would rate it at like a 2.5. I really hope it gets better soon or i may have to drop the book and start soemthing new that is more exciting to me.

Hello.
I'm reading "When You Are Engulfed In Flames" by David Sedaris. It's pretty great so far and rather amusing so I will give it a 4.25. I'm only about twenty or so pages in right but I've heard many times Sedaris is an amazing author. The book is told in first person with humorous insights of the world around him. I'm enjoying this book a lot. So far in the book the main character (what's his name...) only talked about very random events such as about 5,000 children a year are startled to death if the parent were to jump out and yell, "Boo!". I have no idea if that is true or not but if so...wow.

Peace =]

I read some more of Breaking Dawn today. Now I'm at the beginning of the second part written from Bella's point of view. I'd rate this book a 2.5. Of course I love the writing and the characters. I love this series. But I really think this book is stupid. Stephenie Meyers did things that she said couldn't happen, using lame loophopes to make them possible. Bella is so sex-crazed in the beginning, it just disgusted me. I understand where she's coming from I guess, but I still wanted to puke. Is it too old fanshioned to love someone without having sex at least once? She couldn't have waited at all? Anyway, Jacob's point of view was my favorite. Hopefully there's a great, mind-blowing ending. Because using all these things that were supposed to be impossible just looks like she's running out of ideas to me.

Today I read The Plague Maker for the second time. The next chapter I read was about the detective who went and released a horrible disease because he thought he was going to die in a plane crash. The disease infected a young boy and because of that the head of the FBI made the detective go to a therapist. While he is with the therapist trying to get back on the FBI the disease could possibly be spreading. The book is interesting because there are so many different things happening really fast in the story.

Hey, it's Greg! Well, I'm still reading "The Bourne Supremacy", by Robert Ludlum, and I would definitely rate it a 5 so far. The plot is thick and complicated, which makes for a suspenseful and intriguing read, since the reader has no idea of what's going to happen next. There's a ton of dramatic irony, because the story switches from Jason, to his wife Marie, to the government officials who "hired" Jason (whose real name is David Webb) to capture an imposter claiming to be Jason Bourne. I can't tell you more, except READ IT!!!!!!

I am reading Love, Cajun Style by Diane Les Becquets and would rate it about a 4 right now. So far three very close girlfriends are going through their teenage years in the south and are experiencing love for the first time. The book starts out a little slow while their introding the characters and setting. Later things start to pick up as you find out the pranks that go on in the town and mischief they get into and the new boy named Dewey. The books keeps backtracking at some parts and indirect at others but describes the characters in full and has a lot of southern twang. THe book also mentions the Piggly Wiggly which is about the best southern grocery store imaginable.

This week I began reading Eragon for the tenth time in a row because I haven't read it in a while and the third book in the series is coming out in about two weeks. (I forgot the title)I can't wait! I rate this book a 5 hands down. I love everything about it.My favorite part though is when Eragon is trying differnet names for Saphira and figures out she's a girl. I also love the complex plot and characters. I will never get tired of reading this book.

Unknown said...

Christie- I think I would have a hard time reading that book becasue it is repetitive. maybe the author's equivocate language is to make you think about the story. I understand you giving the book a 3.

Alan- I usually like teeen books but sometimes I like mysteries and this book sounds a lot like a mystery. Maybe the plague maker is very pretentious and just wants attention. If I ever finish Breaking Dawn maybe I'll read Plague Maker.

Mrs. Stallman:I posted a blog for the September 3rd blog by accident thinking it was for this week.
So heres my blog:

I started reading "Peaches" because my book from last week was taken. I only got 2 chapter in so far i would rate this book a 3 or 4. The book narrates 3 girls life alternating by chapter. Since i got to chapter 2 i know 2 of the three the first girl is named Murphy and the second girl is named Leeda. I enjoyed it so far because they are my age.

Comment:
Olivia- i have been irresolute about starting to read the Twilight series. but a 4.5 is still really good and from the millions of other people saying how good it is i think i will start reading it.

Sam: yea in Secret you wait but there s a lot of foreshadowing about what happened. But you can't make a supposition till you know at the end when you are told what happened.

hi :]

Emily: I love the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series! I just think that the whole idea of the plot is fun and interesting. I only have one more to book to read and Im hoping I can finish it soon. Another great thing about the series is that it's always written in a lively tone and the characters are most always filled with elan. I guess you could say I'm a stalwart to the sisterhood series.

Unknown said...

Megan- I have great adulation for Eragon. The next book will be Brisingr and It's coming out on my birthday. :D

Andrea- I read the first chapter of that on line, but I am still irresolute to if I'll read any more. The chapter was pretty entertaining, so maybe.

Unknown said...

Sam- I know that Speak is an anathema to you right now, but I promise it gets better. the book is really boring until you find out her secret.

Audrey- I have always wnted to read the Uglies books, but I have been irresolute to reading them because I'm not sure if I would enjoy them. Plus, I think they would kind of freak me out.

Anonymous said...

Sam- I've also read "Speak". I know what you mean about the slow-pace. I feel bad for the main character though because of how she thinks she's culpable for getting raped; it wasn't her fault at all.

Audrey- I loved "Pretties" and the others in the series. It's very interesting how the author wrote the series and how he described the pretties and nebulous "bubble-heads". "Specials" is my favorite book in the series but I love them all.

-Peace =]

Olivia- All these TWilight books are insane and it's all people talk about. A couple people have been trying to get me to read them but I'm irresolute about it. I dont think i woul dlike a book about Vampires that much.

Taylor-I love Sara Dressen's books! They are so good! You have to read Just Listen. It is the best book and if you like her books, you'll love this one! Her writting style is eregious! She's a great author.

Anonymous said...

Audrey-I've read uglies by scott westerfeld. I am irresolute on if i will continue the series. I think i want to read it though, but i remain dilatory to picking it up.

Andrea-sounds like you have a funny book...

Audrey said...

I didn’t rate my book yesterday because I was rushed to get my blog in by the end of academy but I would give my book a 3.5 so far and I hope that it gets better.

Olivia: I would have to agree with you on "Breaking Dawn" I love that book but it moves kind of torpidly at some parts.

Sam: I've heard a lot of good things about that book I really think I need to read it but I have been irresolute about reading it.

Unknown said...

Its Amanda C

Maria: Cajun style turns into a 4.5 near the end. It gets pretty funny at times. I don't want to give anything away but later on the drama teacher becomes an anathema becuase of his actions (You'll see!).

LeAnn: I agree Stephinie didn't do her best this time. This book is probably the most torpid of the series, there's suspense and all but there's barley any action in it.

Emily G said...

Amanda C, your book sounds really interesting. I like the quote! Lea, I was wondering what the title of your book was? Haley, I'd like to read that book; it sounds neat- I like mysterious books. I hope you enjoy the rest of it too. LeAnn, I agree that many of the things Stephanie Meyer did with Breaking Dawn were kind of stupid, but I disagree with your rating- I thought she did a great job telling about all those things and I found myself loving the book despite how egregious it kind of was from the others. I hope you like Bella's second part- I thought it was interesting to know what being a novice vampire was like for her.

Unknown said...

Taylor- I read a book by Sarah Dessen last year (one i have talked about in my blog already) and i absolutely loved it. Ever since then i have wanted to get more of her books because it was one of the best books I've ever read. I'm sure you'll love this book as much as I loved mine. You'll have to tell me how you like it!

Andrea- your book sounds kind of weird, but good. Someone got smashed by a tv? Well you'll have to tell me what you think at the end and maybe I'll read it sometime.

P.S. I will soon be starting the Twilight series that everyone constantly talks about and then maybe I'll be apart of the group of many Twilighters!

Unknown said...

OOPS-I forgot to use the vocab words! So I'll just write some more about other people's books...

-Emily: I love the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies. I have not read the books, but I would love to sometime. I am irresolute on which of the two moives I enjoyed more because they are both so good. I love each girl and how different they are, but they can still be friends.
-Corrine and Christie: It seems that your book is a nebulous sort of book. If they say the things more than once, they will most likely come up as important later in the book, so keep on reading!

Unknown said...

Taylor- your blog was egregious to me because I have been wanting to read that for a long time. I want to go to the library soon and check it out.

Emily- I love those books! It has been a while since I read them though.

Christa- Your book does sound very torpid right now.

Unknown said...

LeAnn: I know what you mean. I couldn't get through New Moon. The book was nebulous and very torpid. I didn't really follow everything. I felt like she dragged on a lot of the things. Don't get me wrong, I like the series, I just felt the book wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

Audrey: The series you're reading sounds so good! I have heard a lot about them! I think i might try to read that soon!

Unknown said...

Audrey- I've never heard if these books before but they sound god from the little bit you told. I like nooks like that so maybe I'll have to read the series.

Emily- I've seen the first movie and I really enjoyed it. I'm irresolute though about if i would actually read the book because I feel like it may be cheesy. But sense you said that they were so intersting, I'll take your word for it.

Amanda- Wow, your book sounds so interesting even though you have only read a modicum amount. From the quote you gave, the book sounds really descriptive which i love! I hope it turns out good for you.

Unknown said...

Ok my book name is called the sweet hereafter. Sorry i forgot.
Anyway, Christie, your book sounds torpid. It sounds like nothing is going on in that point of the book. Hopefully it will start moving along faster.
Audrey, your character Tally sounds as though she is pretentious. Almost like she wants to show off. That book sounds very interesting and i hope to read it sometime.

Unknown said...

emily- I have to express my adulation for the Sisterhodd ofthe traveling pants movie because I haven't had time to oread the series yet. I've only read the first chapter in the first book. You'll have to tell me more later.

Olivia- I have to admit my avarice to read Breaking Dawn slowed after I began reading it. Stepanie could have included a lot more action in it, especially in the ending. Oh well, I'm just content Bella and Edward finally got married and are happy together forever.

Unknown said...

Emily, I love the sister hood of the travleing pants. Although I admit I've only read the first two books you've convinced me it's time to recapitulate the books again and finally finish the series.
Audry, Pretties sounds intriging and and fun. I would say Tally was astute in the first book and in the second. The end of the book is just as good as the first one in my oppinion, but the third is my absolute favorite!

Unknown said...

Audrey - I should read Pretties! I've only gotten through about two chapters of Uglies before I got distracted with other books. Make sure you equivocate when you talk about this book too and don't give anything away to me!

Taylor - Any book written by Sarah Dessen has caught my eye lately, just because I loved The Truth About Forever so much. As soon as I start to abate the amount of books I want to read, I should read this book too! Another added to the evergrowing list. ;]
